Thankfulness

In 1 Thessalonians 5:18 it says “Give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you”. Lately life has been a little overwhelming. It feels like there aren’t enough hours in a day. I could really use 2 or 3 more of myself to accomplish everything that needs to be done. I’m sure many of you feel the same way! Today was one of those days. The hours seemed to fly by and nothing was getting accomplished. As my 3 children and I began to rake our yard and the neighbors I watched as they worked together.

One would rake the leaves, one would hold the trash bag and the other would shovel the leaves into the bag. No one argued, no one refused to work, everyone did what had to be done. When one would get tired they would ask to switch and the other would pick up right where they left off. I was amazed at how well they were working together. Every other day it feels like all they do is argue.

It was in this moment that I realized it isn’t always the big events in life that give us reason to be thankful, but the little moments in between. I was so thankful in this everyday moment. It was nothing special or planned it was just another day. Sometimes I think we forget how valuable the little things are. We forget to find blessings in the mist of the mundane. We are constantly looking for what’s next rather than enjoying the moment we are in now. I look around this fast changing world and wonder what moments I’ve missed because I was looking ahead. Nothing was gained by planning next steps.

The future is never certain. We can plan all we want but circumstances known as life seem to get in the way of how we thought things should go. What we think is best is not always what God sees has best. I am slowly learning that although I have a selfish desire to control everything around me, I can’t. Instead I am trying my hardest to let it all go. Give it all to the One who knows me better than I know myself. I want to live in each moment, breath it in and remember that in all things there is a reason to be thankful. Hope you all have a Happy and Blessed Thanksgiving!!
