A Love Story: Priya Murphy

I am the oldest of five children and was born in India into an amazing family. My parents are pastors so I am what you would call a P.K. (Pastor’s Kid). As the first-born child, I naturally became the prototype, you know the child your parents tried all the parenting skills with… just kidding. I grew up in India for the most part and moved here to the U.S. when I was 19 years old. I have always been a pretty adventurous kid as the oldest in our family. I travelled around the world with my dad in ministries from the time I was about 2 years old. I have never met a stranger in my life because of my extroverted nature. In the Indian culture, girls typically don’t date because our parents find our spouse and arrange our marriage. Well, that clearly was not going to work for me because I wanted to fall in love and find my own spouse. As much as I love my parents, the idea of having them choose my future husband was not on the card for me, so I started the journey of finding the right one or Mr. Right. It was difficult at first for my parents to accept it but eventually they warmed up to the idea of me choosing my own spouse since we were no longer living in India.

Purpose Driven Single Life

As I mentioned earlier, I moved to the U.S., to Lakeland, Florida when I was 19 years old. I went to school at Southeastern University and graduated in 2006 with my Bachelor’s degree. I went on a few dates while I was a college student but most of my concentration was on my schooling and my work. I was actually working as a Youth Pastor part-time, while I went to school full time. I always thought that I would get married when I was 24 years old but NEWS SPLASH, life doesn’t always go according to our plans. I prayed a lot for my future husband and I lived my life to the fullest as a single girl. In fact, in the season of waiting to be found by Mr. Right, I pursued my Master’s degree, travelled to many countries, co-founded a non-profit organization and also bought a house. I was never the type to waste my life while I waited around for the man of my dreams. I went on a few dates here and there in my late 20’s and even went through some failed relationships but all along God was preparing me for the right one. I will admit that the waiting time was not easy, especially when my younger siblings were getting married. I continued to pray and trust in the Lord to bring my husband to me in His perfect timing.

Unexpected Moves

On August 16th, 2014 during my quiet time, God spoke to me from Psalms 107:7 – “He led them by a straight way to a city where they could settle.” This scripture gave me much peace. I understood that God was taking me to a new place, I could possibly be meeting my man and settling down in a new city. The very next month I received a call about a job offer from the President’s office at The King’s University at Gateway in Southlake, Texas. I accepted the job offer after multiple interviews and I moved to Texas from Florida on October 25th, 2014. I started attending the young adult service at Gateway church and very soon served as a volunteer leader for the Connect Team with Gateway Young Adults. Unbeknownst to me, this very act of service would bring Mr. Right, Daniel and I together.

We met at the Gateway Young Adults service on a Tuesday night. He says I caught his attention by the yellow and black dress I was wearing and he thought I was beautiful. I noticed him noticing me and when I realized we were both staring at each other for a while I told my friend who was standing next to me “Man that guy is so hot. Do you know who he is?” My friend said I think his name is Daniel. After church Daniel made his way to me and introduced himself. We started to hang out with each other as friends for five months before Daniel expressed interest in dating me. He informed me that he wanted to ask my parents for their blessings before he takes me on our first date. He talked to my mom and dad on the phone because they were in India at that time. He said, “I would like to date your daughter with the intent to marry her someday.” After an hour of interrogation and counsel, my parents gave him their blessings.

Confirm it with a Roses

Daniel and I went on our very first date on September 6, 2015. I still remember the details of the evening of our first date like it was yesterday. I had been praying all afternoon to the Lord to confirm to me that Daniel is, in fact, the person He had chosen for me. I told the Lord to speak to Daniel and have him bring me 12 red roses when he would come to pick me up on our first date as a confirmation.

When Daniel showed up to my door that evening, he held one red rose stem with his mouth while he was leaning romantically on the doorframe. Our eyes met and he said, “Are you ready for our first date”? Daniel looked very handsome in a striking blue shirt and I was thinking, he brought the right color of rose that I prayed for but the wrong number. While I was pondering this, he revealed the rest of the 11 red roses he was hiding behind his back and gave them to me saying, “You look so beautiful tonight in your red dress so I think you deserve the rest of these roses.” Of course, I was so thrilled to receive the 12 red roses, and I thanked the Lord for the confirmation.

Daniel later informed me that when he went to pick up the roses for me, he was looking for one rose or three roses in red because he knew I liked red. However, the store only had 12 red roses that looked fresh, so he prayed and asked the Lord what he should do. He didn’t want to bring a dozen roses on the first date thinking it might come across a little too strong but the Lord told him, she deserves them, so he went against his better judgment and brought twelve red roses on a first date! Daniel took me to Joe T. Garcia’s, a pretty famous Tex-Mex place in the historic district of Fort Worth, and we had a perfect first date with God in the center of our relationship from the very beginning.
